What do racial justice and health equity mean to you?
I practice cultural humility versus cultural competence, and this means recognize difference I may not be familiar with and want patients and people to guide me. In healthcare, recognizing that race does impact health outcomes is necessary to understand and while I respect the person, I must also acknowledge that my role may require more attention to different health components. Health equity ensures that everyone regardless of age, race, gender, or any other factor is treated ethically.

Please tell us about your experience and/or commitment to growth in racial justice and health equity.
I have attended numerous trainings and conferences, watched TED talks, and read books to grow my knowledge of historic and current racial injustices and health inequity. These have helped me to understand the basis for change, and the need for change, and each has opened my eyes to my unconscious participation in systemic racism and injustices. Only through self-acknowledgment can I make intentional actions to support overcoming these unjust practices.

In what areas of racial justice and health equity work within CPHA do you think you'd contribute the most, and in what work area(s) do you feel you may need more support?
When it comes to policy and processes, I feel that I have a keen eye but with anything and everything in racial injustice, I will take support. For health equity, policy and processes, initiatives, and interventions, I feel my work in Care Coordination has allowed me to understand the bigger picture of health inequity and injustices. By using what I have learned and remaining focused on intentionality, equity, equality, and justice, the work I do individually and within a group can be done effectively.

With over 20 years of experience addressing the social determinants of health, I know there is still so much more to do, and I look forward to contributing to meaningful, lasting change across Colorado.

In what areas of public health are you currently engaged?
As Executive Director of the Eagle Valley Community Foundation, I focus on access to health and wellness, food insecurity, and community leadership advancement. I launched and now oversee MIRA, a Mobile Resource Center addressing social determinants of health in rural Eagle County, offering resources, wellness services, and monthly health education. With The Community Market, we provide nutritious food and cooking workshops for low-income families. Through ELEVAR, we support Latino entrepreneurs with business literacy and leadership opportunities.

What other boards have you served on?
I served on this Board over 15 years ago while completing my Master’s in Public Health and acting as a liaison for a grant Eagle County Public Health received at that time. Currently, I serve locally on the boards of the Vail Valley Foundation, Mountain Rec Foundation, Mountain Family Health Center, and Vail Valley Partnership. In December 2024, I will step down from the Vail Valley Foundation and Mountain Rec Foundation, which will allow me to focus on my true passion: public health.

What skills and experiences make you a strong candidate for this board position?
With over 20 years in public health, including six in early childhood, I bring deep expertise to this board. As Executive Director of the Eagle Valley Community Foundation, I’ve led initiatives like MIRA and expanded food access programs, earning EVCF the 2024 Best Nonprofit of the Year award from Vail Valley Partnership. I also received VVP’s Community Impact Award in 2021. With a Master of Public Health and strong ties to the local mountain community, I excel in strategic planning, program development, and advocating for marginalized populations.

Please tell us about your experience and/or commitment to growth in racial justice and health equity.
In mountain communities, voices—especially those of people of color—are often isolated and unheard, with oppression and submission being common experiences. I am committed to elevating individuals overcoming barriers to access and amplifying their skills and voices. At the Eagle Valley Community Foundation, I focus on empowering marginalized groups in a dignifying and solidarity-driven manner. I create spaces where all individuals can thrive equally and with respect.
